How do artists see their cities? What do they notice in streets, courtyards, bazaars, and in the shadows under trees? And is it possible to draw heat, the smell of fresh bread, the hum of the city, and the feeling of home?
RegisterOn January 18, we will meet Yulia Drobova — the author and illustrator of the book “Hello, Tashkent!” We’ll talk about how a book is born: from the very first sketches inspired by the city of childhood to a cohesive storyline that gradually turns into a large journey through the city.
Yulia will share how a story emerges from scattered drawings, how an artist searches for the city’s rhythm, color, and breath, and how to convey not only buildings but also atmosphere — hot air, the noise of the bazaar, the shade of a mahalla, and a sense of time. We’ll talk about how to feel the spirit of a city and try to draw it. We’ll also discuss hand lettering: why artists draw letters by hand, how text becomes part of an illustration, and how challenging it is to create a book in three languages at once without losing its tone and mood.
The meeting will take place at Topar Bookstore in City Mall.
After the talk, Yulia will sign books. Join us — it will be a conversation about the city, memory, drawing, and how personal recollections turn into books you want to leaf through again and again.
