The Republican Children's Library is a modern book institution, cultural center, and public space for children and adults, housed in a historic building. At the heart of the project is the children's library, well known and remembered by Tashkent residents, operating at this location since 1965. With an open book collection, a public program featuring master classes, and hobby clubs, the library offers free access to information for everyone. The main focus of the project is on children aged 3 to 16 and on childhood itself, aiming to create a favorable environment for learning, creativity, and personal development. It remains a children\'s library, but with space for adults as well.
In 1965, the Republican Children's Library moved into a mansion built in the 1880s by the Vadyayev brothers, which they sold to the city in 1909. At that time, an additional building was attached to the mansion, designed by architect Ivan Markevich, who would later become the city architect of Tashkent. The building originally stood out among others thanks to its architecture. During reconstruction and partial restoration, it was possible not only to preserve the historical and cultural heritage, but also to integrate this 19th-century monument into the modern urban context. The place has become lively and self-developing, demonstrating a modern level of work with architectural heritage and rethinking public spaces.
The reconstruction, relaunch, and reprogramming of the Republican Children\'s Library was initiated by the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation. This is the first such project launched in Uzbekistan. As part of its mission, the Fund takes responsibility for supporting and developing the library as a modern institution of international level, updating its work and providing the necessary opportunities and resources for growth. The project has become a precedent for the preservation, revitalization, and rethinking of architectural heritage in the context of creating a modern urban public space.
